I · ROOTS AND RITUALS

18th-19th century

Our clothes are not for a gala, but for celebrating life. Every mirror of the hat reflects the sun that nourishes the earth. Every colorful ribbon reminds us of those who cultivated these mountains before us.

We dance verdiales so that the harvest will be good, to honor the land that gives us bread. This outfit is a portable altar, a woven prayer.

II · PATHS AND TRADES

18th-19th century

We went up with wine and came down with oil, spinning paths between mountains.

Our outfits were as tough as the trails, but they maintained the dignity of labor. The leather of the trousers protected against the cold of the mountains; the dark cloth of our women resisted the wind while they waited with a jug of hot broth.

We were the thread that connected the port of Málaga with the white villages.

III · THE ROMANTIC SPLENDOR

III · THE ROMANTIC SPLENDOR

19th century

Between fandangos and strolls through the Alameda, fashion became a mirror of pride. While romantic travelers painted our landscapes and wrote legends of bandits, we dressed our history with the elegance of great capitals. But always with the spirit of Andalusia: a Manila shawl, a comb, a red sash that revealed the heart of the mountains.

V · MEN AND WOMEN OF THE SEA

19th-20th century

The sea gives and takes away. On the shore, we weave nets, sell fish, and sing verdiales. Our clothes, worn and salty, tell more than a thousand books. She, with her apron stained with scales, proclaims the anchovy through the streets of Perchel. He, with his rolled-up pants, coming back from the almadraba. We are the south, the saltpeter, the hard and beautiful life of the Mediterranean.

V LIVING TRADITION

S.XX-XXI

Every August, the streets are filled with history. We wear what we inherit, but we make it our own. The 'faralaes' dress that my daughter wears today is not the same as the one I wore, nor the one my grandmother wore. The ruffles dance to the rhythm of the 'sevillanas', but also to current music. Tradition remains alive in every fair, in every pilgrimage, in every thread. Because tradition is not immobile: it is what endures while transforming.
